Currently, there are about 11 million people who self-report that they enjoy skateboarding on a regular basis. Skateboarding wasn't always popular within mainstream American culture, but it sure has been over the last few decades. Now, with the advent of electric skateboarding, more and more people are hopping on motorized longboards and skateboards and joining this already popular community.

  1. The first official skateboarding competition was held in California in 1965.
    1. Electric skateboards are actually water resistant.
    2. With 97 millimeter wheels, an electric skateboard can reach speeds up to 26 miles per hour.
    3. In 1978, Alan "Ollie" Gelfad invented one of the most popular tricks of all time: the ollie.
    4. The highest ever recorded ollie was 45 inches high
    5. The longest ollie in the world was 16 feet, 6 inches (done by Jordan Hoffart).
    6. The record for the most stairs ever ollied over is held by Aaron "Jaws" Homoki at 25 stairs.
    7. Original skateboard wheels were made of clay or metal.
    8. Most professional skateboarders are ambidextrous because they constantly practice in different positions and stances.
    9. Skateboarding will officially be recognized as an Olympic sport at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
    10. Norway banned skateboarding entirely from 1978 to 1989.
    11. The average skateboarder is 12 years old, but children as young as two have started skateboarding, and even people in their late 60s have started learning how to skate.
    12. Jagger Eaton holds the world record for the longest rail grind at 204 feet.
    13. The first female pro skater was Patti McGee. She turned pro in 1964 and set the record for fastest female skater at only 19 years old. She is also the first female ever to be included in the Skateboarding Hall of Fame.
